PSG ordered to pay Mbappe over £50m in long-running court case

Paris Saint-Germain have been ordered by a French court to pay Kylian Mbappe 60 million euros (£52.5m) in outstanding salary and bonuses following a long-running contractual dispute.

The ruling comes after the case reached a Paris labour court in November, with Mbappe initially pursuing a much larger claim of £231.5m. PSG, in turn, had launched a counterclaim against the France captain worth £211m.

Mbappe, now a Real Madrid player, argued that he was owed a nine-figure sum that included £46.3m in unpaid wages, alongside damages linked to alleged mistreatment by the club during the final stages of his contract.

The court ultimately awarded a significantly reduced amount, determining that PSG had failed to pay three months of Mbappe’s salary between April and June 2024, along with an ethics bonus and a signing-on bonus specified in his contract.

“We are satisfied with this ruling. This is what you could expect when salaries went unpaid,” said Mbappe’s lawyer Frederique Cassereau.

PSG had sought compensation linked to Mbappe’s collapsed 300 million euro move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in 2023. The forward instead joined Real Madrid on a free transfer the following summer after opting not to renew his contract in Paris.

In a separate statement, Mbappe’s legal team said the decision reinforced basic employment principles.

“This judgement confirms that commitments entered into must be honoured. It restores a simple truth: even in the professional football industry, labour law applies to everyone.

“Mr Mbappe, for his part, scrupulously respected his sporting and contractual obligations for seven years, right up to the final day.”

The dispute between player and club has been ongoing for more than two years, triggered by Mbappe’s refusal to move to the Saudi Pro League and his decision not to sign a contract extension.

Mbappe has consistently maintained that he was marginalised as a result.

He was excluded from PSG’s pre-season tour of Asia and missed the opening match of the 2023-24 campaign before later being reintegrated into the squad.

PSG previously stated this followed an agreement in which Mbappe would give up some end-of-contract payments to safeguard the club’s finances, a claim his representatives dismissed as “fantasy” during November’s hearing.

PSG also accused Mbappe of acting “disloyally by concealing for nearly eleven months, between July 2022 and June 2023, his decision not to extend his contract” and claimed the club had suffered “significant damages”.

Mbappe spent seven seasons at PSG between 2017 and 2024, initially joining on loan from Monaco before completing a permanent move.

During his time in Paris, he won 15 trophies and established himself as the club’s all-time leading scorer, netting 256 goals in 308 appearances, including 44 goals in 48 matches during his final season.
