Qualcomm has given budget and mid-range devices a major boost, officially launching the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 —the first 6-series chip built on a 4 nm process node.
The new platform is designed to give more affordable devices the same features typically reserved for higher-end devices. This offers users faster performance, better gaming, and an improved camera experience without being too expensive.
Android Central notes that the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 is a significant upgrade over the 6 Gen 1, largely due to its 4nm architecture. Qualcomm says this new architecture offers better efficiency and performance, with the company’s product overview showing that the new Kryo CPU is up to 26 per cent faster, with the Adreno GPU improving graphics by 59 per cent.
As Qualcomm’s product overview points out, this will translate into smoother multitasking, faster app load times, better camera support, and even better connectivity. Talking about the camera I mentioned earlier, the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 supports up to 200 MP photo capture, alongside 2K video recording with triple image signal processors (ISP) for what Android Central describes as “more versatile shooting setups.” The Gen 6 also uses hardware-accelerated Multi-Frame Noise Reduction, enabling more detailed low-light photos.
Speaking of smoother connectivity, Qualcomm also notes that the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 features a built-in 5G Modem-RF System that delivers download speeds up to 2.9 Gbps and supports both sub-6 GHz and mmWave. The new chip also supports Release 16 5G, WiFi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.4.
Qualcomm hasn’t confirmed which devices will get the new Snapdragon chip, but brands like Xiaomi and Motorola are expected to adopt it at some point soon.
