Rachel Zegler has reflected on the intense backlash she faced following her casting as Snow White in Disney’s live-action remake, describing the period as a confusing and challenging moment early in her career.
Zegler, who first rose to prominence with her breakout role in West Side Story, found herself at the centre of an online debate after it was announced she would play the iconic Disney princess alongside Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen. Much of the criticism came from viewers questioning her casting, while others used the moment to debate the wider issue of modernising classic stories.
Speaking recently about the experience, Rachel Zegler said the reaction highlighted the strange and often contradictory scrutiny placed on actors, particularly those with mixed heritage. The actress, whose background includes Colombian and Polish roots, explained that she has often been told she is “not enough” of one thing for certain roles, while being considered “too much” of another for others. For her, the backlash surrounding Snow White reinforced the importance of embracing her identity rather than trying to meet shifting expectations.
The controversy also became entangled in broader online discussions about representation, nostalgia and the direction of Disney’s live-action remakes. As the conversation grew, Zegler’s own social media presence added another layer to the debate. During the film’s promotional cycle, she shared personal and political opinions online, something she says she still believes in. She has since acknowledged that posting in the moment can sometimes complicate matters further.
Looking back, Zegler has suggested that while speaking out remains important to her, social media is not always the clearest path to creating meaningful change.
Despite the difficult period, which at times included serious online hostility, Zegler appears to have come away from the experience with a stronger sense of self and a determination to move forward in the industry without compromising who she is. She has recently enjoyed huge acclaim in the West End for her role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita revival.
