The family of Afolabi Stephen Opaso, a Nigerian international student who was shot and killed by a Winnipeg police officer nearly two years ago, is calling for a new investigation into his death after a watchdog report written last week by Alberta authorities found “no reasonable grounds” to charge the officer with a criminal offence.
Opaso, 19, was studying at the University of Manitoba when died in hospital on Dec. 31, 2023, after police shot him in a University-Crescent apartment during a well-being check for mental health concerns.
