Newcastle’s Champions League run ended in devastating fashion at Camp Nou, a breathless first half giving way to a second-half rout as Barcelona scored five times after the break to complete an 8-3 aggregate win.

For 45 minutes, Eddie Howe’s side had matched the La Liga leaders blow for blow in one of the most extraordinary first halves European football has seen in years.

By the end of the night, Newcastle had conceded seven goals in a single match for the first time since a 7-3 defeat to Arsenal in December 2012.

Raphinha’s sixth-minute opener – helped considerably by Lewis Hall slipping at a critical moment – was cancelled out by Anthony Elanga’s composed finish after Hall, to his credit, then delivered a sumptuous ball in behind the Barcelona defence.

Marc Bernal restored Barcelona’s lead from a cheaply conceded free-kick on 18 minutes before Elanga struck again on 28, side-footing home at the back post from Harvey Barnes’s low cross.

Newcastle might have gone into the break level. Dan Burn produced a remarkable last-ditch block to deny Raphinha and Lewandowski in a two-on-one situation, and Yamal incredibly blazed over from eight yards with Ramsdale beaten after the goalkeeper had spilled Raphinha’s effort.

Instead, a VAR-reviewed penalty in the fifth minute of added time for Trippier’s pull on Raphinha allowed Yamal to slot home and send Barcelona in 3-2 ahead on the night, 4-3 on aggregate.

    Barcelona shift gears

Newcastle needed a perfect start to the second half. What they got was the opposite. Fermin Lopez was slipped through one-on-one by a brilliant Raphinha clip on 51 minutes and slid a clinical finish into the bottom right corner. The tie was over.

Lewandowski, who had been relatively quiet, then took centre stage. The Polish striker headed Raphinha’s corner into the bottom right corner on 56 minutes before a moment of genuine brilliance five minutes later, dummying his original shot on the edge of the box before sliding it into the bottom left as the angle opened up.

At 37 years and 209 days old, Lewandowski became the oldest player ever to score twice in a Champions League match, surpassing Filippo Inzaghi’s record set for Milan in 2010.

Raphinha completed a magnificent personal display on 72 minutes, pouncing on a loose ball and rolling into an unguarded net to make it 7-2 on the night.

Newcastle had nothing left to give. Tonali limped off with injury, Elanga was withdrawn, and tired bodies struggled to cope with the relentless movement of Barcelona’s attack.

Ramsdale produced a fine late stop to deny Yamal but could do nothing about the goals that had already beaten him.

The result matches the joint-highest total ever conceded by an English side in European competition, equalling Tottenham’s 7-2 loss to Bayern Munich in 2019.

For Newcastle, it is a painful end to a campaign that promised so much, and delivered a great deal, right up until the final 45 minutes.
