West Ham required extra time to overcome League One side Burton in the FA Cup, with Crysencio Summerville’s goal eventually earning the Hammers a 1-0 win.
Burton created the first real openings. Tyrese Shade twice tested the West Ham defence inside the opening half hour, one effort blocked in the box and another saved low by Alphonse Areola.
Jake Beesley also fired from distance, while Sebastian Revan struck wide from a set piece. West Ham struggled to establish rhythm in possession and instead relied on direct moments, with Callum Wilson’s long-range effort comfortably handled by Bradley Collins.
The visitors improved after the interval and began to spend sustained periods in Burton territory. A succession of corners and crosses followed, with Konstantinos Mavropanos seeing a close-range header saved and multiple shots blocked inside the six-yard area.
Adama Traore and Wilson both had attempts crowded out as Burton’s back line held firm.
Despite the pressure, Burton continued to threaten sporadically. Julian Larsson shot over from a central position and Kain Adom was denied by Areola after working space on the edge of the area.
Neither side found a breakthrough before the end of normal time, sending the tie into extra time.
West Ham finally took the lead in the 95th minute. Ezra Mayers broke forward and squared into the box where Summerville met the pass and lifted a right-footed finish high into the net from close range.
The visitors were reduced to ten men six minutes later when Freddie Potts received a red card for a late foul on Larsson, setting up a tense final period.
Burton pushed bodies forward and forced a series of corners and blocked shots, with Jasper Moon and Toby Sibbick both seeing close-range attempts stopped.
Adom then forced a strong save from Areola, while Kgaogelo Chauke fired narrowly wide late on.
West Ham, now defending deep, attempted to run down the clock. Burton’s final deliveries into the area were claimed by Areola, and a late flurry of yellow cards followed as frustration grew among the home side.
After more than 120 minutes, West Ham held on to progress, although it was far from a vintage performance from the Premier League side.
