On a tricky pitch in rainy conditions, Premier League bottom side Wolves won at fourth-tier Grimsby Town, who beat Manchester United at home in this season’s EFL Cup.
The Black Cats beat Championship strugglers Oxford United and Fulham came from behind to see off another second-tier team, Stoke City.

Grimsby vs Wolves: Edwards calls Santiago Bueno goal ‘brilliant’
Wolves are 18 points from safety with 12 games remaining in the league, but their fans have a far more promising campaign to focus on after Rob Edwards’ team reached the fifth round with their only attempt on target when Santiago Bueno scored with a thigh from Joao Gomes’ cross.
“It was a brilliant finish,” said Edwards, via Wolves’ website. “He made a great run – a little darting run across the six-yard box. I was really pleased to see it fly in the top corner.
“It was quite an aggressive game of headers and volleys in the end. It was an interesting game: really difficult conditions, really challenging conditions and the same for both teams.
“It was a different type of game – a bit of a throwback – and one we could only win by being professional and doing it right.

“It was never going to be a day for beautiful football, it was never going to be a day for trying to build and play from the back.
“I think they hoped we would, but we played with some realism. We showed really good spirit and fight, did the basics well and came through.
“It was an interesting day for some of our Brazilians, but they won’t forget today.
“We talked a lot over the last few days about mentality… it was great that [Grimsby] were able to [beat] Manchester United earlier in the season, because we could lean on that to ensure we showed complete respect to the opposition, the conditions, the game and the competition.”
Grimsby will now focus on their bid to at least reach the League Two play-offs, sitting two points away from seventh place with 16 league games remaining in their campaign.
Oxford United vs Sunderland:
Sunderland’s impressive season continued as Habib Diarra’s 33rd-minute penalty sealed a deserved win over resilient Oxford.
“We expected a tough game,” said Mackemsn manager Regis Le Bris, via The Northern Echo. “We had that last season [in the Championship] when we came here, struggled and lost 2-0.
“We’re a good team, we’ve got to step up to be a great team.”

“They [use] some very direct play, winning second balls… that was a part of the game that was always going to be really important.
“We struggled with it a little bit in the first half, but it was much better in the second half. We scored… that helped us to manage the match from that point on much better.”
Le Bris’ side are 11th in the top flight, four points off a potential European qualification spot. Oxford are five points from safety with 14 games to play in the Championship.

Harrison Reed pounced on a misjudged pass by Stoke City goalkeeper Tommy Simkin to score Fulham’s winner six minutes from time at Stoke.
Bae Jun-Ho drilled the Potters in front after 19 minutes and City almost doubled their lead when Lamine Cisses curling shot was tipped against a post by Benjamin Lecomte.
Winger Kevin charged inside the box and fired Fulham level in the 55th minute, starting a comeback that culminated in a place in the next round.

“This game was important for some players,” said Fulham head coach Marco Silva. “It’s crucial for us to have Rodrigo Muniz and Josh King back.
“They came back from different types of injuries. We know how well they played at the beginning of the season together.
Silva said Oscar Bobb, who arrived from Manchester City for £27 million in January, was “very, very good”.
“You can feel it the quality in small spaces that he’s going to give,” added Silva. “And it was a very good game from Kevin, too. He created many very good moments from our left-hand side.”
Fulham are 12th in the Premier League, two points behind Sunderland immediately above them. Stoke are 14th, five points from the second-tier play-off places.

The FA Cup fifth round draw will be made on Monday, 16 February, during the pre-match coverage of Macclesfield vs Brentford, which starts at 18:30 GMT.
