Quintana Roo says its tourist trade remains strong following an outbreak of violence in different parts of Mexico last month after security forces killed a prominent drug trafficker.
“Tourism activity continued normally during Feb. 21-28, a period in which the state’s destinations saw an average hotel occupancy of 85.4% and approximately 574,706 tourists, which reflects the confidence national and international tourists have in Quintana Roo,” the Quintana Roo government said in a March 1 statement.
“The state’s 12 tourist destinations are operating without interruption, with airports, ports, cruise terminals, transportation services, hotel zones, public beaches and tourist attractions functioning regularly and providing quality experiences.”
The week saw 55 cruise ship calls at Mahahual and Cozumel, bringing 146,300 passengers. Authorities also reported there were 4,969 flights at the 4 Quintana Roo airports.
Quintana Roo also said state officials are working with municipal and federal authorities to provide tourists with an “orderly, safe and efficient operation.” Meanwhile, Renée Boisvert, vice-president, tour operator products & sales at Transat, said tourists shouldn’t be nervous about visiting Quintana Roo.
“We are pleased to see that local authorities confirm the smooth running of tourist activities in the region. This is also what we are hearing from our hotel partners on the ground: operations are continuing as usual, and travellers are fully enjoying their stay. Clients can therefore plan their trip to the State of Quintana Roo with complete peace of mind.”
