The Saskatchewan Roughriders have re-signed American quarterback Jack Coan to a one-year extension, tying him to the team through 2026.
The six-foot-three, 218-pound passer first joined the Roughriders as a free agent in 2024. He has since dressed for 23 regular-season games and completed 12-of-29 pass attempts for 138 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions.
The 27-year-old went unselected in the 2022 NFL Draft but was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent. He was waived after training camp and signed with the San Antonio Brahmas of the XFL. In eight games, Coan connected on 62.0 percent of his passes for 1,403 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions.
The native of Sayville, N.Y. finished his collegiate career at Notre Dame, where he completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 3,150 yards, 25 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He led the team to an 11-2 record and had a record-setting performance in the Fiesta Bowl, throwing for 509 yards and five touchdowns in a loss to Oklahoma State.
Coan is one of four quarterback now under contract with Saskatchewan for 2026, a group that also includes Trevor Harris, Tommy Stevens, and Brayden Schager. Jake Maier, the team’s incumbent backup, remains a pending free agent.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders finished first in the West Division standings in 2025 with a 12-6 record, finishing first in the West Division for the first time since 2019. The team went on to defeat the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg, marking the team’s first championship in 12 years. Trevor Harris went 11-5 as a starter, throwing for 4,549 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
The Roughriders ranked second in net offence, second in net defence, and tied for third with a turnover differential of plus-eight. The club’s leading rusher was A.J. Ouellette with 1,222 yards, leading receiver was KeeSean Johnson with 1,159 yards, and leading tackler was A.J. Allen with 91 tackles. Saskatchewan finished second in attendance with average crowds of 28,427, which was a 2.7 percent increase from the previous year.
