Scarlett Johansson is set to enter the world of demonic horror, signing on to star in a new feature within The Exorcist universe that will be written and directed by Mike Flanagan. The project, announced by Universal Pictures along with Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek, marks a significant reinvention of the iconic franchise.
The yet-to-be-titled film is being described as a standalone story that exists within the established Exorcist mythology but is not connected to 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer. According to the producers, the creative team is aiming for a fresh narrative direction, with no direct ties to the recent trilogy plans that stalled after Believer underperformed. Plot specifics remain tightly guarded, and Johansson’s role has not been disclosed.
Flanagan, known for genre accomplishments such as Doctor Sleep, Oculus, and the Haunting series, will write, direct, and produce through his Red Room Pictures banner. Jason Blum and Ryan Turek will produce for Blumhouse, alongside David Robinson for Morgan Creek, underscoring a collaboration between studios long associated with modern and classic horror. Flanagan has described the opportunity to revisit The Exorcist as both a creative challenge and a personal milestone, citing the original 1973 film as a key influence on his career.
Johansson’s involvement adds notable star power to the reboot. While she has worked across an array of genres — from action blockbusters to prestige dramas — this film marks one of her most significant steps into pure horror. Her casting is expected to help reposition the franchise at a time when Universal is seeking a new path forward for the property.
Production details and a release date have not yet been announced, but the combination of Johansson and Flanagan has already generated strong industry interest as the franchise moves toward a new creative era.
