Selena Gomez Reveals Taylor Swift’s ‘Dorothea’ Was About Her
When Swift dropped her “Evermore” album in 2020, one song in particular caught fans’ attention. “Dorothea,” featured lyrics that had many screaming it was about Gomez, but neither of them confirmed or denied the speculations at the time.
Gomez finally answered the five-year-old question on a recent appearance on her husband Benny Blanco’s “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast. The March 3 episode shared on YouTube captured the actress with her beau and his co-hosts, Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco.
“‘Dorothea’ is about me,” Gomez began when asked about why she resonated with Swift’s music on a deeper level than fans. She explained that she connected with her longtime pal’s songs, particularly “Dorothea,” because it captured some of the most vulnerable times of her life.

What The ‘Only Murders In The Building’ Star Said About The Song

“I feel like a lot of huge moments that were self-defining, from relationships to family to love to hate, all of it in between—we were figuring it out because I was 15 and she was 18,” Gomez said about her relationship with Swift.
She noted that at the time, they were too young to really understand how to navigate life. Nonetheless, when she listened to songs like “Dorothea,” Gomez was astounded by how Swift “eloquently” captured the chaos and beauty of their lives.
Gomez didn’t stop there, revealing there was an unreleased song about her friendship with Swift called “Family.” She claimed the singer wrote the track at least a decade ago, and the lyrics focused on how they both wanted to be the biggest stars while growing up.

Gomez Says Swift’s Song Tributes Are ‘The Sweetest Thing’

Gomez added that listening to these songs about her friendship with Swift hit deeper than they did in the past because they had achieved the dreams the singer wrote about.
“And that’s really sweet because back then, she was just like, ‘I wrote this song about us, and it was just our story,’ and it was the sweetest thing,” she raved.
When Swift announced the release of her ninth studio album in 2020, she dropped a statement on X about her creative process. At the time, she hinted that the songs were based on fictional characters, noting she had created “17 tales.”
The list included “Dorothea, the girl who left her small town to chase down Hollywood dreams—and what happens when she comes back for the holidays and rediscovers an old flame.”

They continued flaunting their friendship at different award ceremonies, never missing a moment to support each other. In 2015, Gomez was among the star-studded cast of Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video and even made a surprise appearance at Swift’s 1989 tour for a joint performance that same year.
