Comedy writer and actor Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy and American Dad) has reportedly confirmed there are no current plans for the third season of Peacock’s Ted series, according to a quote obtained by The Wrap.
The series, which first aired in early 2024, is a prequel to the 2012 hit comedy feature of the same name.
However, the creator and star have recently announced that the second season may be the final.
“What I kept hearing [from Peacock and Universal] was, ‘Listen, the show is really expensive to produce, and there’s no way to do it at a lower cost.’ So I said, ‘All right, I hear you loud and clear,’” MacFarlane stated. “So I wrote the last scene with Max [Burkholder] walking into a gym, presumably coming out as Mark Wahlberg in the first ‘Ted’ film.”
“So [showrunners] Brad Walsh and Paul Corrigan and I kind of painted ourselves into a corner,” he added. “Is there a way to do it? There’s always a way to do anything. But at the moment, it might take some narrative acrobatics.”
He finalised his statement with: “There’s no plan that I’ve heard of at the moment to do Season 3.”
The film, starring MacFarlane as the voice of the magical teddy bear Ted and Mark Wahlberg as the grown-up John whose been his best friend since childhood, focused on Ted and his Boston-living friend slumming through life with beer, drugs and He-Man re-watches while John’s girlfriend (Mila Kunis) disapproves and presses for marriage.
The first film was the highest-grossing comedy of 2012 and was followed by a sequel in 2015, featuring Amanda Seyfried, as Ted takes on a mission to be recognised as a person.
A prequel spin-off TV show was confirmed in the summer of 2021, and the first season was positively reviewed, with the show as a whole holding a 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Season two was confirmed in May 2024 and debuted this month, immediately becoming Peacock’s most-viewed original release after just three days.
Ted is available to stream on Peacock.
