The Single White Female remake, which will be titled Single Female and star Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell, will be written by Bodies Bodies Bodies writer Sara DeLappe, as exclusively confirmed by Deadline.
Stacey Sher and Marisa Paiva have also been confirmed as producers who will share the credits with stars Ortega and Russell. Sher also has producer credits on the horror thriller Heretic, Contagion, and Django Unchained.
As for DeLappe, her play The Wolves helped her earn the American Playwriting Foundation’s inaugural Relentless Award, and her writing on the black-comedy horror Bodies Bodies Bodies, directed by Halina Reijn and released in 2022, helped the film become a smash hit and an internet favourite.
Ortega has become a staple face in contemporary horror media thanks to her appearances in the revamped Scream franchise by director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and the Netflix smash-hit show Wednesday. Russell was the co-star of Luca Guadagnino’s 2022 romantic-horror Bones and All with Timothée Chalamet.
The project will be a revamp of the original 1992 film by Barbet Schroeder, which starred Bridget Fonda as a young woman called Allison in search of a roommate and Jennifer Jason Leigh as Hedra, who fills the position but secretly plots to invade Allison’s life. Single White Female earned mixed reviews but went on to become a staple in the golden age of the erotic thriller, as well as outdoing its budget of $16 million by grossing $84.1 million at the box office.
