Telus’ Koodo brand launched a $40/60GB Canada/U.S./Mexico bring-your-own-phone (BYOP) plan on Black Friday, and over the weekend, some customers were able to get a similar deal from Rogers-owned Fido.
Neither Fido nor Bell’s Virgin Plus officially launched a competing offer to Koodo’s Black Friday deal, but Fido reportedly offered a similar plan at some retail locations. Per details shared on the Red Flag Deals forum, some customers in B.C. and Ontario were able to get the offer in stores, as well as at some third-party retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, and The Mobile Shop.
Fido’s deal offers 60GB of 4G data for $40/mo, as well as Canada/U.S./Mexico calling, texting, and data. Because the deal is only available in stores, customers are on the hook for the $80 connection fee, but several people shared they were able to bypass the fee. For example, some customers got a $5/mo credit for 16 months to cover the connection fee, while some of the third-party retailers reportedly covered the connection fee in other ways.

It’s also worth noting that Fido’s plan only has 4G data, while Koodo offers faster 5G with its plan. Aside from that, both deals look about the same. Moreover, some Koodo customers managed to get an additional $10/mo discount on the plan, bringing the cost down to $30/60GB.
Overall, your mileage here will vary. It’s not clear how widely available the Fido offer is, or the $10/mo discount on the Koodo plan is. Koodo is still offering the $40/60GB plan on its website, but Dec. 1 is listed as the last day for the promotion. If you can’t get the plan from Koodo or Fido today, then it will be gone.
However, if you live in an area with Freedom Mobile coverage, you might have more options. Freedom has a $39/70GB 5G Canada/U.S./Mexico plan available, and while the carrier’s deals are also set to end on Dec. 1, that plan was $39/60GB before Black Friday. While we don’t yet know if it will go back to $39/60GB, there’s a chance it might.
And finally, Public Mobile has a $40/70GB 5G Canada/U.S./Mexico plan with 20GB of bonus data for six months. That deal also ends today, but if you don’t have any luck with Koodo or Fido, Public at least runs on the same network as Koodo and should offer very similar service. (I’ve been with Public Mobile for about a year now and haven’t had any issues with it compared to Koodo.)
