The latest title in Sony’s post-apocalyptic Horizon universe has been announced —but it isn’t going to be console-first.
Developed by NCSoft and Dutch-based Guerrilla, the new game will be called Horizon Steel Frontiers- and will be a cross-platform game between PC and mobile (iOS/Android). According to the game’s website, though, it will be free to play.
The official announcement comes from a 10-minute long YouTube trailer that combines cinematic and pre-alpha footage with developer interviews. According to the trailers, the game will focus heavily on taking down giant mechanical beasts across the Horizon universe, and doing so in collaboration with others. The collaboration was a huge point of note for NCSoft co-chairman Taekjin Kim, who noted that he “was a little wistful that such an incredible world had to be experienced alone.”
The Horizon devs also referenced the universe surrounding the players, while stressing the NPCs’ resilience and hope.
The Verge discovered the new MMORPG by spotting promotional art for Steel Frontiers on a game asset-sharing website, which also included a Google Drive link with publicly accessible promotional footage. According to The Verge, the art was posted ahead of the official announcement at G-Star 2025 in Korea.
The announcement also highlighted Steel Frontiers’ game customization feature, in which, instead of playing as Aloy (the main protagonist of the Horizon series), you will be able to customize your own character.
