It’s not been long since Sony acquired the rights but things are already moving fast with The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealing Wonka‘s Paul King will direct an upcoming feature project based on Labubu’s, one of the world’s biggest collectible sensations.
Not much is known about the story at this stage with the project being in early development and still in need of a writer. However, it is known that Sony is working with Chinese retailer and brand owner Pop Mart on the adaptation as well as that King will produce the project alongside Department M (The Christophers, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle remake) and Wenxin She (Wish Dragon, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood).
For those that don’t know about the toy, they were originally designed by Hong Kong-born, European-based artist Kasing Lung and initially made by How2 Work as part of a line of monster figurines. They then got incredibly popular after Chinese retailer Pop Mart took over making and selling them in 2019, partly because of their ‘blind boxes’ but also as a result of the adoption of the toys by certain celebrities.
King is repped by WME, UK’s Independent Talent Group and Davis Law Group.
