As reported in an interview with The Empire State Building’s official YouTube Channel, Marvel star Tom Holland has discussed a “tonally…more mature” Spider-Man: Brand New Day – and the on-screen dynamic between his Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man and the darker, more cutting-edge character of The Punisher.
The trailer for his love, MJ (Zendaya) and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon), alongside the rest of the world, forgets his existence following the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. There also lingers a looming threat of a physical evolution and a new batch of villains.
“I am so excited for people to see Jon Bernthal as the Punisher in this movie,” his new co-star Holland beamed.
He added, “You know, he’s come from a very different world. He’s in the R-rated universe, and we’ve basically picked him up and plonked him into our world, and he absolutely sings in this movie. He is incredible.”
Holland also shared that “the relationship between Spider-Man and the Punisher is so funny, and it changed a lot, and it evolved a lot as we were shooting because Jon and I would improvise.”
According to the actor, the dynamic began as “two people that really kind of hate each other”, but once the two “started improvising, it became this big brother-little brother rivalry”.
Holland has cited “it might be [his] favourite dynamic that [he’s] ever seen with Spider-Man.”
The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, working from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, standing as the 38th installment in the global blockbuster MCU film franchise.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is also set to feature Jon Bernthal reprising his role as Frank ‘The Punisher’ Castle, previously appearing in the Netflix shows Daredevil, Daredevil: Born Again and The Punisher.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theatres on July 31st.
