In a real-life story straight out of a Disney movie plot, a malnourished cat survived the harrowing trek from China to Minnesota, in a daring display of instinct and determination. What happened with this situation, and what else do we know about everything that went down?
Cats Are Incredibly Resilient
Many people often praise cats for their resiliency. Cats, and many animals in general, have an incredible capacity to bounce back from challenges and anything that life may throw at them. Going all the way back to civilizations like the ancient Egyptians, cats were revered.
Even in your local neighborhood with the strays in your area, cats face whatever life throws at them with immense tenacity and the instinct to survive. This was absolutely the case for one cat in China, who survived a harrowing trek from the far east to the shores of Minnesota.
Cats are known for having a high bounce-back rate when it comes to facing adversity. Cats may not have nine lives, but they do have the strength and perseverance to survive situations that they otherwise should not have. In the case of this cat who survived the long trek from China to Minnesota, she was without food or water and yet, somehow, managed to survive the trip.
Cat From China Survives Harrowing Journey In Shipping Container
According to PEOPLE, “The cat’s journey began in June when she accidentally hitched a ride inside a shipping container, traveling roughly 8,000 miles over three weeks from China to Minnesota. When the container arrived in Oakdale, Minn., Xiao Mao was found cowering under pallets — remarkably alive but emaciated and severely dehydrated.”
The feline is named Xiao Mao, which means “little cat.” Kerry D’Amato, the executive director of the facility caring for Xiao Mao, said, “It’s actually amazing she survived that journey, and we are not 100% sure how she did it. Three weeks without food or water, she would not be alive. She must have been drinking condensation, maybe eating bugs and rodents there.”
It turns out that Xiao Mao has also bonded with another feline friend, and the next goal is to get the pair adopted together. After such a harrowing journey, it would be the icing on the cake and the reward for such a touching story of survival and triumph.
D’Amato continued, adding, “When she arrived to us, she was deathly thin and very ill. She would charge at us, hiss, and lunge. Today, she chirps at us and comes out when we call her. Her eyes are bright, her ears are forward, she is giving us all the indications she is trusting.”
