Survivor recently returned for Season 49. Even though things are just getting started, fans already saw a surprising change happen to the castaways. Recently, a few figures close to the story have even shed some light on what’s going on.
The Alternates Were Interviewed A Few Days Before The Big Change Was Made
Survivor, which premiered back in 2000, is an American adaptation of the Survivor reality competition franchise. Recently, the series has entered its 49th season, having wrapped up the previous season this past May.
Season 49, which was filmed in the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji, debuted on September 24, 2025. During the premiere, however, fans were already treated to a big shakeup.
This surprise occurred during the introduction of the 18 castaways. Showrunner and host Jeff Probst shared that two of the contestants, Jason Treul and Michelle “MC” Chukwujekwu, were actually last-minute alternates. In fact, they joined the show 12 hours before filming started.
Probst claimed that the two contestants who were originally set to compete on the show were sent home before filming started after breaking a major rule. This notably marks the first time two alternates were brought in at once.
Over the years, fans have seen a few alternates get brought to the island on Survivor. Some recent examples include Sage Ahrens-Nichols and Sophie Segreti, who actually joined Season 49 as main castaways.
Both Jason and MC spoke with Entertainment Weekly about being alternates on the show before the change was made. For his part, Jason made a reference to Schrödinger’s cat, sharing, “I call it being Schrödinger’s Survivor. Like, is he alive? Is he dead?”
At the time, MC shared that her role as an alternate actually gave her something of an advantage. She shared, “A cool thing is that the people here don’t know I’m an alternate.”
Jeff Probst Also Discussed The Last-Second Change
“So they’re still sizing me up. ‘Do I want her as an alliance or not?’ It’s been great reading people, and if I don’t make it in, I can watch the show and see how close I am. And also just mentally preparing myself [for the future].”
Meanwhile, Jason looked at the bright side amid the possibility of returning home. He noted, “I got a free flight to Fiji, all expenses paid. I get to see Survivor, I get to see all the players, I get to see how the sausage is made, I get to talk to you, and this interview may never come to light. It’s like, how do I soak it all in?”

In a separate conversation about the switch with the outlet, Jeff Probst himself also weighed in on what happened. He shared, This season, something unexpected happened and we removed two players from the game and our two alternates—who thought they were there just as insurance knowing that most likely they would be invited back next year to play—were suddenly thrust into the game.
Probst added, “It was a shock, for sure.” Echoing MC’s comments, he also suggested that Jason and MC’s unique situation could end up working to their advantage.
