Potter has yet to win after two games in charge.
Sweden head coach Graham Potter has extended his contract until 2030.
The Swedish Football Association (SvFF) announced the extension on Thursday, despite Potter having overseen just two games in his brief tenure with the national team.
Potter made his name in Sweden with Ostersunds, before managing Swansea City, Brighton and Hove Albion, Chelsea and West Ham.
“To be able to continue in this role means a lot to me. I feel both a great pride and a great responsibility,” Potter said in a statement.
“It’s a big day for me and a fantastic opportunity to do something important going forward … Sweden is a football country with a proud history of teams that have made it to the finals of major championships and competed there, which we want to return to.”
Sweden’s path to the World Cup
Potter was appointed last October, towards the end of a disastrous performance in the group stage of UEFA qualifying for the World Cup.
Sweden finished bottom of Group B, taking only two points as they were twice beaten by both Switzerland and Kosovo, while claiming a pair of draws from games with Slovenia.
Yet Sweden still advanced to the play-offs courtesy of their performance in the UEFA Nations League, which saw them win Group C1 to earn promotion to League B.
That meant Sweden progressed to the play-offs as one of the top four-ranked Nations League group winners who did not finish in the top two of their qualifying group.
Sweden still face a tricky task to get through the play-offs, as they take on Ukraine on March 26 in a one-legged semi-final.
Should they prevail, Sweden will meet the winner of the tie between Albania and Poland in Stockholm on March 31 for a place in the finals.
Who would Sweden face in the World Cup?
If Sweden get through the play-offs, they will go into World Cup Group F.
Their opponents would be Netherlands, Japan and Tunisia, with their opening game against the latter on June 14 in Guadalupe.
But there is a lot of work to be done before Potter, who oversaw a 4-1 defeat to Switzerland in his first game in charge before a stalemate with Slovenia, can think about a World Cup campaign.
While Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has found some form for the Gunners, Liverpool’s Alexander Isak remains sidelined, as does Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall.
Those issues are set to deprive Potter of some of Sweden’s best players for the play-offs, and Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga can at best be described as being in inconsistent form for the Magpies.
As such, qualifying for the World Cup finals may well prove to be beyond Potter’s men.
However, with a Nations League campaign getting underway following the World Cup and Euro 2028 qualifying beginning next March, Potter’s extension is likely to be a case of the SvFF looking for long-term stability.
