Taye Diggs isn’t afraid to dig deep and tap into his own relationship highs and lows for his art — and that’s exactly what he did for Lifetime’s His, Hers & Ours.
“Now that I’m a little bit older and I’m divorced and have a kid, it’s really easy to just draw on what has been going on in my actual life,” Diggs, 54, exclusively told Us Weekly on Tuesday, October 28, of his latest project. “It makes everything a little bit more potent and realistic.”
In Terry McMillan Presents: His, Hers & Ours, which premieres on Saturday, November 1, Diggs plays a single father named Darius. After discovering his teenage daughter (Chloé Flowers) in bed with her boyfriend (Tyler Lofton), Darius kicks him out, but his mom, Kelly (Lesley-Ann Brandt), doesn’t appreciate Darius’ tough dad move and confronts him about it.
Sparks begin to fly between the two parents, and their romance blossoms behind closed doors. However, when they tell their kids about their feelings, their love will be put to the test.
While Diggs hasn’t fallen for his real-life son’s significant other’s mom, he told Us he used his own life experiences to portray the character. (Diggs shares son Walker, 16, with ex-wife Idina Menzel.)

“It’s a very interesting position to be in, because singularly, just as a man, as an actor, I’ve had so much experience,” Diggs explained. “I have a kid. My kid is 16, so I know what all the different iterations of childhood are like.”
The actor noted that on a personal level he is “set” in his ways and “kind of comfortable with being single,” much like his rom-com character. “At the same time, I don’t want to end up alone,” he confessed.
Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs split in 2013, but they’ve remained committed to amicably coparenting their son, Walker. The exes welcomed Walker in 2009, six years after tying the knot. Diggs revealed that “the idea of spending my life with someone else [is] in the rearview mirror” for now, confessing, “The times that I have dated, it’s a little bit awkward. It’s a little bit weird, it’s a little bit interesting.”
He told Us that the idea of “sharing my space with someone else [is] not second nature,” which he tried to show in the Lifetime film.
“All of that I can bring into these roles, and it’s always really, really fun to play too,” Diggs said of playing a single man finding love later in life.

When it comes to His, Hers & Ours, Diggs called the complicated love story between two parents whose kids are also dating a “fun element of surprise.” As a “big fan of romantic comedies,” Diggs was thrilled to be a part of the story.
“I haven’t seen one like this done before,” he said of the movie. “And then the idea of playing it, you know, where you want to look out for your own offspring. But then when you’re a little bit more mature in life [so] you realize, when you do find love, you don’t know if and when you’re going to find it again.”
Diggs added that showing that “conflict” on screen was “really great” as an actor. “We found a lot of humor in that, in those situations. So it was so much fun,” he teased.
Diggs also told Us that because he loves the genre of romantic comedy, he leaned into the role of Darius even more.
“I get a chance to kind of look cool, and acting-wise, it’s really great to kind of build a relationship on screen,” he said of the movie. “If the writing is good, you have a good dose of comedy [as well]. That’s always really fun. It’s the most fun for me to play. So I get to tick all the boxes.”
