In a conversation with Collider (via ComingSoon), Tessa Thompson reflected on her experience working within the MCU as well as what direction she’d prefer her character, Valkyrie, to go in moving forward.
Thompson has portrayed the Valkyrie since 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, and during this conversation, alluded to the idea of the character evolving and appearing in a less comedic setting, leading to more opportunities to explore a different side of her role. She said, “I feel like I’ve mostly existed in kind of a comedic space with Valkyrie, but I’m curious if I were in a film that felt less comedic, how she would show up in those particular spaces.”
She added that the tone of each MCU film allows new possibilities for character evolution. Opening up new opportunities for Valkyrie to interact with other characters within the MCU could also lead to further exploration for her in the role. Thompson clarified that the most rewarding aspect of the franchise is working with a variety of talented actors, stating that “One of the things that is so cool about getting to play in the MCU is obviously all the incredible actors that you get to act alongside.”
On this topic, Thompson hinted at the idea of Valkyrie potentially teaming up with Bucky, who is played by Sebastian Stan, whilst expressing her appreciation for Stan, as they have both wanted to work on a project together for some time. She said, “I don’t know what his character would bring out in me, necessarily, but I just really love Sebastian.”
Tessa Thompson last appeared in the MCU as Valkyrie in Thor: Love and Thunder, which was widely criticised at the time for relying too heavily on its comedy. Hopefully, if the character were to appear in a more serious setting, it would help restore faith in fans who were left disappointed by the last Thor film.
