Lionsgate is moving forward with a sequel to The Housemaid, amid the Sydney Sweeney-led thriller’s box office success. Also starring Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, Mamma Mia!) and Brandon Sklenar (It Ends with Us, 1923), the film is based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel. You can read our review of the film here!
It’s likely the greenlit sequel will be based on McFadden’s second book, The Housemaid’s Secret (via Deadline).
The 2025 adaptation follows Millie (Sweeney), working as a live-in housemaid for the wealthy Winchester family in a bid to escape her past. But things go awry when Millie’s dream job plunges her into danger, as the Winchester home harbours twists, turns, and dreadful secrets.
Sweeney (Euphoria, Christy) is expected to return in the leading role, alongside exec producer responsibilities. Co-star Michele Morrone (Another Simple Favor, 365 Days) will also likely return, along with director Paul Feig (Last Christmas, Bridesmaids) and screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine.
McFadden herself, author of the bestselling trilogy, will also serve as an executive producer on the sequel.
The first film has already grossed $135 million against a $35 million budget, reaching $75 million in its first 17 days of release in the US.
Feig commented on the film’s success: “It’s been thrilling to see audiences around the world fall in love with The Housemaid and the incredible work of our talented cast and crew. We’re lucky that Freida McFadden has already extended Millie’s journey on the page, and that we get to work with Rebecca Sonnenshine and Lionsgate to bring this next story to audiences.”
The Housemaid is in cinemas now.
