ABC and Disney+ have released a brand-new trailer for the upcoming The Muppet Show special, which will serve as a reboot of the classic series.
The original version of The Muppet Show was created by Jim Henson and ran from 1976 to 1981 in over 100 countries. It featured notable guest stars including Elton John, Johnny Cash, Diana Ross, Debbie Harry, Gladys Knight, Liza Minelli, Paul Simon and many others. The reboot will premiere on both ABC and Disney+ in February, which will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original series. At the time of the original announcement, Deadline reported that the special would serve as a backdoor pilot and, if successful, would spawn a new Muppet Show television series.
In the trailer, we see a first look at guest star Sabrina Carpenter, as well as the newly announced appearances from Maya Rudolph and executive producer Seth Rogen. It even hints at the potential new television series with Kermit saying in the clip, “It’s the return of The Muppet Show back on the very stage where it all started, and then ended, and is maybe starting again, depending on how tonight goes.”
From 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, The Muppets Studio and Point Grey Pictures, the special is directed by Alex Timbers, who also serves as executive producer. Rogen, Goldberg, James Weaver and Alex McAtee are the executive producers for Point Grey Pictures; David Lightbody, Leigh Slaughter and Michael Steinbach are the executive producers for The Muppets Studio; Carpenter, Albertina Rizzo, Matt Vogel and Eric Jacobson are executive producers.
