In what’s quickly becoming a tradition from Disney, recreating their classic/ most successful animations in live-action versions. Moana may be one of their more recent additions, however, it’s next and today Disney unveil a first Teaser Trailer, can you hear the sea calling you?
The live-action version was announced back in 2023 with Catherine Lagaʻaia and Dwayne Johnson reprising their roles as Moana and the trickster demigod Maui. The studio has given Mickey Mouse mixed responses critically as well as from fans, the last few years. The Lion King, Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin, to more recently, The Little Mermaid, Lilo and Stitch and Snow White. Some not the fault of the films, some cast members finding out how powerful social media can be, regardless of whether right or wrong.
This is only a teaser; it does highlight many classic moments fans of the animation will love. From the characters, the ancestors, the ships, and the original story will be reprised once again for the big screen. Whilst not a Disney film, could this have the success How To Train Your Dragon live action got this year?
The rest of the cast includes cast from New Zealand: John Tui as Moana’s no-nonsense father, Chief Tui; Samoan-New Zealander Frankie Adams, who portrays Moana’s playful and strong-willed mother, Sina; and Rena Owen, from Bay of Islands, New Zealand, as Moana’s revered Gramma Tala.
Synopsis:
In Disney’s live-action adaptation of the beloved Oscar®-nominated animated adventure, Moana (Catherine Lagaʻaia) answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.
Moana is set to be released on 10th July 2026.
