X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has quietly announced that the twitter.com domain will be retired and that the company will require anyone using a security key (YubiKey or passkey) for two-factor authentication (2FA).
Last week, X’s safety account posted that all accounts that use a security key as their 2FA method must re-enroll their security key by Nov. 10 to continue using X. The company also noted that you can re-enroll using the same security key or create a new one.
After Nov. 10, if any users haven’t re-enrolled their security, their accounts will be locked until they either re-enroll, switch to a different 2FA method, or elect not to use 2FA at all.
Of course, this led to speculation that the company’s authorization infrastructure was compromised. Still, X’s safety account posted a follow-up clarifying that the security keys are currently enrolled with the old domain. The new security keys will be tied to the x.com domain, allowing the brand to retire twitter.com.
Users also pointed out that a lot would break if X decided to retire the domain name all at once, with some noting that a fair amount of the social media platform’s backend still uses the old Twitter.com domain. 9To5Mac pointed out that X’s automatic replacement of twitter.com with x.com in tweets has led to company accounts like Grok AI publishing tweets that might not make sense at first.
To add some context, Twitter (slowly) transitioned to X branding last May, completing owner Elon Musk’s vision for a shakeup of the longstanding platform.
