Timothée Chalamet is one of the most popular actors today. He is a strong contender for the Best Actor Award at the Oscars on March 15. However, his Oscar bid is now in jeopardy after he made controversial comments days before the ceremony. The hosts of The View were among those calling the actor out, slamming him as “vapid.” Keep reading to find out why everyone is mad at Timothée Chalamet.
Timothée Chalamet Under Fire After Shocking Diss
Before this week, the most controversial thing about Timothée Chalamet was his girlfriend. He’s been dating reality star Kylie Jenner for several years. The unexpected pair is reportedly considering a TV wedding. The relationship is especially surprising because Kylie Jenner has two children from a previous relationship.
But Timothée Chalamet found himself at the center of major controversy after comments many found offensive. The actor was doing a town hall with Matthew McConaughey when he unexpectedly dissed ballet and opera as part of the arts “no one” cares about. The comments came as he was talking about supporting movie theaters.
“I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey! Keep this thing alive,’ even though no one cares about this anymore,” the actor said. Realizing that his comments would be controversial, he made it worse by adding, “I just lost 14 cents in viewership.”
The View Hosts Blast Actor As ‘Vapid’
Timothée Chalamet’s diss of ballet and opera made headlines around the country. The Metropolitan Opera trolled the actor on social media, “Sorry, @tchalamet. We’d offer you complimentary tickets to Akhnaten, but it’s selling out.”

The View hosts addressed the controversy during Monday’s “Hot Topics” discussion. Sara Haines reminded viewers that Timothée Chalamet’s grandmother, mother, and sister were all ballet dancers.
Sunny Hostin, who used to be a dancer herself, blasted his comments. “I’m offended and disappointed in what he said. I didn’t realize that he was that vapid and that shallow,” she said.
Guest co-host Sheryl Underwood is filling in this week while Alyssa Farah Griffin is on maternity leave. She somewhat defended Timothée Chalamet because he was “young” and didn’t know better.
“I think he thought he could say that. First, he just made the good ping-pong movie. He’s a young, handsome man,” she said. The comedian added, “But I bet if he was playing [ballet dancer] Rudolf Nureyev… he’d respect the art form a little bit better.”
“That goes to show a lot of young people need to understand, don’t just flip off and say something. Really understand that your words have meaning to other young people,” Sheryl Underwood advised the younger generation.
Timothée Chalamet has yet to publicly apologize or address the criticism. He’s up for Best Actor at the 2026 Oscars on Sunday, March 15. Before his remarks, he was in a heated race with Michael B. Jordan for the award.
