Popular short-form video app TikTok is once again allowed to keep its business operations in Canada, but there are now new rules in place.
The federal government said on Monday that it will allow the social media platform to continue to operate in Canada and allow an investment to proceed after the recent national security review reversed the conclusion of the previous one.
The approval is subject to the new legally binding undertakings provided by TikTok Canada, according to Industry Minister Mélanie Joly.
In November 2024, Canada’s Industry Ministry ordered the dissolution of TikTok’s Canadian operations after the previously mentioned national security review found security risks. However, Canada’s federal court overturned the government order back in January and allowed the platform to keep operating in Canada.
TikTok has also acknowledged the undertakings by the Canadian government and that it has reached an agreement to keep its local operations in place.
According to a statement, the platform will implement enhanced protection for Canadians’ personal information, including new gateways and privacy-enhancing technologies to control access to users’ data. The platform has also appointed a third-party monitor to check and verify the data controls and protections, monitor data flows, and provide reports to the government.
TikTok has also added enhanced protections for minors, including additional support for Canadian organizations working on online safety and digital literacy. To add some context, the platform agreed to improve its measures to keep children off its Canadian website and app following an investigation that found its efforts to block children and personal information were inadequate.
