Tim Allen is opening up about an unforgettable and uncomfortable interaction with Tom Cruise that unfolded after a screening of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” revealing how one shouted comment during the film led to a face-to-face confrontation and a joke-filled reflection involving Scientology. Speaking to the crowd at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles on Thursday night as part of his ongoing 2026 stand-up tour, the 72-year-old comedian shared how his habit of loudly reacting during movies got him into trouble at the high-profile premiere.

“You know, this celebrity sh-t, I say hi to these people like I know them. When I go in there, I want the swag. I want the ‘Mission: Impossible’ hat,” Allen joked, according to a Daily Mail reporter who attended the show.

About 30 minutes into the film, Allen said he couldn’t help himself during a particularly over-the-top action sequence. “Some BMW seven series goes off of a parking structure, lands nose first, flips over. Cruise gets out and just does this…,” Allen recalled, mimicking Cruise emerging perfectly composed from the crash. “It would’ve killed Batman, so I said ‘bullsh-tt’!” he told the crowd.

According to Allen, the reaction was immediate. “The whole theater” went quiet, he said, with audience members turning to stare at him. One person even shouted, “Yeah, it’s kind of funny Mr. [Buzz] Lightyear?” referencing Allen’s iconic Pixar character. “I try to apologize. ‘Yeah, I’m just f-cking around,’” Allen added, while noting, “Cruise’s ears are bright red.”

Allen said the moment didn’t end there. After the screening wrapped, Cruise allegedly made his way down the aisle directly toward him. “He walks down the f-cking aisle, looks at me. I’m scared to death, even though the dude is literally this tall,” Allen joked, gesturing to Cruise’s 5’7” height. “My grandpa always said eat crow while it’s fresh, so I apologized. I said, ‘hi, bye.’”

Despite the tension, Allen described Cruise as pleasant, though he couldn’t resist adding a supernatural twist. “And the guy was a nice guy, you know. I think he put a spell on me, though, because he’s a Scientologist. His eyes got really red and something hit me.”

Cruise has long been one of the most prominent public figures associated with Scientology and was previously an outspoken advocate for the Church of Scientology. Allen, meanwhile, told the audience he considers himself a “religious guy,” explaining that he was “forced to” follow religion as a child and still attends church “every Sunday” with his family. He is married to wife Jane Hajduk and has two daughters, Elizabeth Allen-Dick, 16, and Katherine, 36, whom he shares with ex-wife Laura Deibel.

Cruise wasn’t the only Hollywood heavyweight Allen ribbed during his hour-long set. When discussing Tom Hanks, Allen recalled losing out on the role of Detective Scott Turner in 1989’s “Turner & Hooch.” After learning Hanks landed the part, Allen joked that he told “the guys at Disney” that Hanks was a “no talent motherf-ker,” before adding, “He has no p-nis.”

Allen also took aim at Ryan Reynolds, poking fun at superhero costumes and his own experience playing Captain Zoom/Jack in 2006’s “Zoom.” “Every time I see ‘Deadpool’… Ryan Reynolds isn’t even in this costume right now. He’s back getting his nails done in his trailer,” Allen joked, suggesting stunt doubles handle much of the work.

Despite his disdain for costumes, Allen said none were worse than his “Santa Claus” outfit. The actor revealed the fat suit weighed “58 pounds” and required six hours in the makeup chair. He played Santa multiple times, including in “The Santa Clause,” “The Santa Clause 2,” “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause,” and Disney+’s “The Santa Clauses.”

Allen also admitted that when cameras weren’t rolling early on, he would smoke cigarettes, behavior that didn’t sit well with Disney executives. “The Disney folks came up to me, they’re creepy… they said can you please stop saying ‘f-ck’ when you’re in a Santa suit?” he recalled.

He added that he hadn’t realized the 125 kids on set weren’t actors, but actual children, many of whom believed he was the real Santa Claus. Allen found that detail particularly ironic, as he told the audience he “hates kids.”
