The latest trailer for the highly anticipated A24 film, Marty Supreme, has been released online. The sports biopic film stars the likes of Timothée Chalamet and Tyler, The Creator, and has been getting rave reviews from everyone lucky enough to see it so far.
It’s set in New York in the 1950s and follows Marty Mauser (Chalamet), a young man fighting against the odds to become a ping pong champion. The life of real real-life tennis player, Marty Reisman, loosely inspires the character. The film charts the highs and lows of his journey as he flies to Japan and takes on his great rival, Koto Endo (Koto Kawaguchi). It’s directed by Josh Safdie, who is known for directing Uncut Gems alongside his brother Benny. The film also includes the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Fran Drescher, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, and Abel Ferrara in the ensemble cast.
There is already a lot of buzz around the film, with many predicting that Chalamet’s performance will generate significant Oscar buzz due to his incredible commitment to the role. In an interview with Variety, cinematographer Daruis Knodji revealed that “He wanted to be like a real [professional] ping pong player when he started shooting” with other reports talking about Chalamet going as far as organising for Table Tennis to be available on set for him to train over the last six to seven years.
From writer/director Josh Safdie and starring Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher.
