When Today Show co-anchor Sheinelle Jones lost her husband, Uche Ojeh, viewers were heartbroken for her and her children. They also wondered if she would ever return to her post at Studio 1A in New York City. Yet, she proved how incredibly resilient she is and is back and better than ever. Sheinelle recently received a “magical” message from Uche, and it was beautiful to see. Keep reading for more details on when and where this happened.
Sheinelle Jones Gets ‘Magical’ Message
Today Show viewers really came to love and respect Sheinelle Jones. She blended in really well with her fellow anchors, so when she took a leave of absence, there were a lot of questions. Sheinelle left in 2024 and said she had a family matter to tend to. As it turned out, her beloved husband, Uche Ojeh, had been battling brain cancer, specifically glioblastoma. He passed away in May 2025 at the age of 45. The duo shared three children and seventeen years of marriage.
Again, it was unclear what her plan was after her husband passed and if she was up for a comeback. At the beginning of 2026, Sheinelle was made the permanent co-host of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, and the ladies just took the show on the road. They headed to Jamaica, and Uche Ojeh happened to appear on the vacation. The ladies were chatting about an excursion they went on when they saw yellow butterflies. Sheinelle Jones started to share the significance, but held back until Jenna Bush Hager encouraged her to go on:
“So, Jenna and I were out yesterday in nature, and I see butterflies. Long story, another time, I’ll tell you…I see butterflies. I feel like it reminds me of [my late husband] Uche [Ojeh] and the things I love, especially yellow butterflies.”
While they were talking about various other topics, an audience member soon spotted a yellow butterfly. Jenna made sure that her Today co-host saw it, and that nearly brought Sheinelle to tears. She then proceeded to note how magical Jamaica is and thanked the audience for seeing the butterfly:
“I don’t want to cry on television. I told you guys! I told you! I told you! I love that you guys saw it for me. I told you, this is a magical place. Come to Jamaica, I’m telling you.”
A Very Special Place
Just like Jamaica holds warmth and love for Sheinelle Jones, so does the Today Show studio. She felt embraced returning after her husband passed, as she had received so much compassion and well-wishes from her co-hosts and the audience. This is very similar to Savannah Guthrie, who has been gone from the show since the beginning of February 2026.
Her mother, Nancy, 84, was seemingly abducted from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1st, 2026. Since then, Savannah has dedicated her time and energy to trying to find Nancy. Now, she is planning to come back to Today, as that is her home and a big part of her heart.
