Sheinelle Jones recently started a new position on Today. This notably followed her stepping away from the show after the death of her husband, Uche Ojeh. Recently, however, she took time to share a reflection on this heartbreaking loss.
Today‘s Sheinelle Jones Talked About Uche Ojeh In A Recent Interview
Jones first joined Today back in 2014 as part of Weekend Today, later working for Today‘s third hour. Back in December, it was announced that Jones would become a permanent co-host for the show’s fourth hour. Following this, the hour was renamed Today with Jenna & Sheinelle.
In her personal life, Jones married Uche Ojeh in 2007, meeting him at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The two would share three children together. Back in May, it was announced that Ojeh had passed away from aggressive glioblastoma. At the time, Jones took family medical leave from NBC News in November 2024, following her husband’s 2023 diagnosis.
Jones recently opened up about the impact loss has had on her since her husband’s passing. The mother of three shared, “I have been changed in a good way, too, because of what’s happened to me. I’m not afraid of anyone. I’ll talk to anyone. And we can have a conversation because I’ve been through the worst.”
“Now, I’m leaning into fighting for my joy and connecting with people and squeezing the most I can out of life. And I want to see my kids see me do that so that they do the same.”
Nine months after losing her husband, Jones also admitted that grief can still be “excruciating.” She also noted that people might think she’s doing or feeling better since they see her on television. However, she felt that the truth is that this takes a lot of “work.” She also felt that she really needed to “fight” for her “joy.”
Jenna Bush Hager Shared A Few Words For Her New Co-Star
Jones also shared just who she’s pushing forward for. As she noted, her story can be therapeutic for people who read it. She also added that it’s normal for people to want to give up, and she has had this temptation herself.
Ultimately, Jones felt that it was important for people to see her “winning.” Thinking about her new co-hosting gig with Jenna Bush Hager, she also liked that people would see two “girls have sisterhood and laugh one moment, cry the next, talk about our kids, talk about our parents. I can’t wait.”

Jenna also had a few kind words for her new co-host. In particular, she shared, “She’s really such a reminder to all of us that joy and heartbreak can be held at the same time and that we have to find moments of joy and celebration even in darkness.”
