New details have emerged about Digger, Tom Cruise’s upcoming black comedy directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Speaking on the My Mum’s Basement podcast, Deadline’s Senior Film Reporter Justin Kroll revealed that the Mission: Impossible star will be almost unrecognisable, thanks to heavy prosthetic makeup, comparing the character to Cruise’s outrageous turn as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder.
Digger marks the first collaboration between Cruise and Iñárritu, with the director best known for for Birdman, The Revenant and Bardo, all projects which blend psychological storytelling with dark humour and surreal storytelling
When asked whether Digger was a straight-up comedy, Kroll described the project as a “multi-genre” film, likening its tonal approach to Iñárritu’s 2014 Oscar-winner Birdman. With the film’s official logline reading “The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he’s humanity’s saviour before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”
Speaking about the project, Warner Bros. Pictures CEOs Pam Abdy and Mike DeLuca also shared their enthusiasm for the film with Adby expressing that the movie is like “nothing you’ve seen before”. She added “That’s what’s so brilliant. This is the fourth time I’ve worked with him (Iñárritu). He never repeats himself, and he’s constantly taking you into his mind and his vision and surprising you. And this movie does exactly that.” DeLuca echoed her praise, describing the movie as “Stunning”.
Alongside Cruise, the film boasts a stellar supporting cast including Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Emma D’Arcy, Robert John Burke, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, Burn Gorman, and Pip Torrens, and is set to land in cinemas 2nd October.
