The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is the primary focus of the global cricketing community as the tournament approaches its February 7 start date in India and Sri Lanka. Ahead of the opening clash between the host nation and the USA in Mumbai, cricketing icons have begun dissecting the squads and conditions that will define the 20-team event. With 55 matches scheduled across iconic venues like the Wankhede Stadium and Eden Gardens, the tournament is poised to be a high-stakes test of tactical depth and subcontinental expertise.

AB de Villiers’ semi-final predictions for T20 World Cup 2026

Former South African captain and RCB legend AB de Villiers has officially shared his top four contenders for the title on his YouTube channel, AB de Villiers 360. De Villiers backed India, South Africa, England and New Zealand to reach the knockout stages, noticeably excluding the 2021 champions, Australia. He identified India as the ‘outright favorites,’ praising the squad’s immense variety and the current form of key players like Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakaravarthy.

“The moral of the story once again is the fact that the depth of Indian cricket is unstoppable right now. I don’t know how teams are going to beat them. From 6/2 to hammer a street-smart team like New Zealand in 15 overs is absolutely ridiculous.” De Villiers stated.

T20 World Cup 2026: De Villiers on India’s challenge of home pressure

While labeling the Men in Blue as the team to beat, De Villiers warned that the ‘favorites’ tag brings a unique psychological burden when playing in front of a home crowd. He described the intensity of an Indian World Cup campaign as a persistent mental challenge that extends far beyond the boundaries of the cricket field. Reflecting on the atmosphere the players will face, he remarked:

“Everything looks hunky-dory for Team India. But it doesn’t work like that in World Cups, especially when playing at home, the pressure will be extra. They are the massive favorites, but World Cups throw all kinds of surprises. They have to counter the pressure of playing at home. That is a daunting thing when you are awake at midnight, and you are playing the following day, you feel that pressure. You see it everywhere on the streets and read about it. It just never leaves your mind.” RCB legend added.

To navigate this high-pressure environment, De Villiers advised the Indian squad to prioritize team unity over individual accolades. He suggested that the secret to success lies in a collective ‘pack hunting’ mentality, similar to the one fostered by MS Dhoni during his legendary tenure with Chennai Super Kings. Outlining the blueprint for a successful title defense, De Villiers shared:

“The key will be to stick together as a team and counter the pressure through the culture they’ve built. It’s important not to shoot off in different directions and try to win the tournament as individuals. That’s something CSK did back in the day with MS Dhoni, where they found a way to stick together, and no individual ever felt separated from the group.” De Villiers concluded.
