HBO has dropped the first teaser trailer for the third season of House of the Dragon, offering audiences a glimpse at what promises to be the series’s most expansive chapter yet.
Following a divisive second-season finale that many viewers felt functioned more as a setup for season three, the new teaser focuses on the looming battle and its fallout. With the Targaryen civil war escalating, the upcoming season is set to tackle several major events from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.
One of the season’s key threads appears to centre on Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), whose mysterious vision at Harrenhal hints at deeper mythological elements coming to the forefront this season. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Alicent (Olivia Cooke) remain at the heart of the conflict as the Dance of the Dragons intensifies.
Returning cast members include Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel, Harry Collett, Tom Glynn-Carney, Ewan Mitchell, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Tom Taylor, Tom Bennett and Freddie Fox.
The series is expected to conclude with a planned fourth season. Showrunner Ryan Condal is continuing to steer the adaptation of Martin’s sprawling fantasy saga.
Synopsis:
Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon chronicles the rise and fall of the House Targaryen, set nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Season 3 will pick up following Season 2, with the start of the civil war, triggered by the death of Prince Lucerys Velaryon at the end of Season 1. The major battle scene was intended for Season 2, but shifted to Season 3 when Season 2’s episode count was reduced from ten to eight episodes.
House of the Dragon: Season 3 is set to premiere on HBO this June.
