The historic Eden Gardens in Kolkata bore witness to a high-octane thriller on Sunday, as India locked horns with the West Indies in the 52nd match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In a high-stakes Super Eights (Group 1) encounter, the Men in Blue secured a dramatic five-wicket victory, chasing down a daunting target of 196 with just four balls to spare. While the match belonged to the brilliance of Sanju Samson, it was the post-match camaraderie that stole the hearts of fans across social media.

As the team transitioned from the jubilant atmosphere of Kolkata to Mumbai for the upcoming semi-finals, India’s vice-captain Axar Patel was seen in high spirits. In a viral snippet shared on Snapchat, Axar took the opportunity to playfully grill Samson about his long-awaited breakout performance on the world stage.

Axar Patel shares light-hearted moment with Sanju Samson after match-winning display in Kolkata

The victory flight to Mumbai was filled with laughter, primarily fueled by Axar’s interrogation of the Player of the Match. Axar, known for his dry wit, cheekily asked Samson if he finally felt a sense of relief after guiding India home under immense pressure.

In a moment that has since gone viral, Axar looked at the camera and then at the wicketkeeper-batter, saying, “Chetta, finally. Kab debut hua tha? (Brother, finally. When did you make your debut?)” The remark was a light-hearted jab at Samson’s decade-long journey of sporadic opportunities and stop-start international appearances since 2015. The comment left Samson blushing and smiling, while captain Suryakumar Yadav, sitting nearby, burst into uncontrollable laughter. The interaction highlighted the incredible team bond as India heads into the knockout stages, proving that the new India plays with as much heart as they do skill.

    Here’s the video:

Chasing a massive 196, India’s pursuit looked shaky early on. After losing openers Abhishek Sharma (10) and Ishan Kishan (10) within the Powerplay, the scoreboard read a precarious 41/2. However, Samson played the innings of his life, turning the daunting chase into a clinical exhibition of power hitting.

Samson remained unbeaten on 97 off just 50 deliveries, striking at a phenomenal 194.00. His masterclass included 10 fours and 8 towering sixes, effectively dismantling the West Indian bowling attack.

Earlier in the day, the West Indies posted a formidable 195/4, powered by late cameos from Rovman Powell (34*) and Jason Holder (37*). Despite a disciplined spell from Jasprit Bumrah (2/36), the Windies looked favourites at the innings break.

Samson’s contribution wasn’t limited to the bat; he also showcased his agility behind the stumps, clinical in taking two crucial catches to dismiss Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford. Samson has firmly silenced his critics, ensuring India enter the semi-finals as the team to beat in this 2026 T20 World Cup.
