The ongoing Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE has brought plenty of drama on the field, but it has also given cricket fans moments of humanity that go beyond sport. One such touching incident came during India’s clash against Sri Lanka in Dubai on Friday when Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav consoled young Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage, who is going through the toughest phase of his life after losing his father midway through the tournament.

Dunith Wellalage’s personal tragedy during Asia Cup 2025 game

For Wellalage, this edition of the Asia Cup has carried emotions of both responsibility and sorrow. The 22-year-old spinner was representing Sri Lanka in a group stage match against Afghanistan on September 18 when tragedy struck back home. His father suffered a fatal heart attack during the game, and the devastating news was only conveyed to him after the match by head coach Sanath Jayasuriya and team manager.

The news shook the entire Sri Lankan setup but Wellalage decided to honour his father by returning to the team after performing last rites in Colombo. His choice to join the Super Four stage despite personal grief reflected his commitment to the national side. Teammates, support staff, and fans praised his resilience, with many remembering how other players in the past have shown similar courage to continue playing despite irreparable personal loss.

In the Super Four encounter against India on Friday, Wellalage featured in the playing XI once again. However, what stood out more than his presence with the ball was the emotional support he received from the opposition leader.

Suryakumar Yadav’s heartfelt gesture for Wellalage wins praise

Videos circulating on social media captured a moving moment between the rival cricketers before the start of play. Suryakumar, who has taken over India’s T20I leadership role in this tournament, walked up to Wellalage during team huddles and had a heartfelt conversation with him. Placing a hand on his chest, Surya was seen assuring and motivating the grieving spinner like an elder brother would. Wellalage responded with a nod and a faint smile, a show of appreciation for the empathy shown by his rival captain.

The exchange struck a chord with fans and experts alike, with many lauding Surya for displaying the humane side of the game in competitive circumstances. Social media timelines described it as one of the finest gestures of the tournament, proving that kindness and respect transcend boundaries in cricket. Former players also highlighted how such acts help cricket maintain its tag of being a “gentleman’s game.”

The encounter itself was a high-octane thriller. India piled up 202 for 5 on the back of Abhishek Sharma’s fluent fifty before Pathum Nissanka stunned the Indian attack with a sparkling century. Sri Lanka managed to tie the game at 202 with Dasun Shanaka taking it to the last ball but Arshdeep Singh had the final word in the Super Over, conceding only two runs and dismissing two batters. India sealed victory in style with Suryakumar himself hitting the winning runs on the very first delivery.
