‘To be, or not to be’ and the question is Universal Pictures release the official Trailer for Aneil Karia’s Hamlet starring Riz Ahmed in the titular role.
The classic William Shakespeare once again will grace our screens early next year. We’ve seen many Shakespeare stories adapted, very few take the modern adaptation. This version of Hamlet takes us to current day London with a wealthy British South-Asian family taking centre stage. When our titular character returns home for his father’s funeral he finds his mother has now married his uncle Claudius. Revenge is on his mind when his father’s ghost reveals who killed him.
This one also stars Morfydd Clark, Joe Alwyn, Sheeba Chadha, Avijit Dutt with Art Malik and Timothy Spall.
Leoni Horton watched the film for The Peoples Movies at this year’s BFI London Film Festival. Leoni described Aneil Karia’s “Hamlet is filled with talent, risk, and vision; qualities that mark them as collaborators to watch closely in the future“. Synopsis | A contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet set in a wealthy British South-Asian family. Hamlet returns home for his father’s funeral and is shocked to learn that his uncle Claudius will now marry his widowed mother. When his father’s ghost reveals that Claudius murdered him, Hamlet becomes consumed by revenge, questioning the corruption at the heart of the family’s business, and his own sanity.
Riz Ahmed delivers a raw, urgent performance, bringing razor-sharp intelligence and emotional force to one of theatre’s most demanding roles. This contemporary staging explores power, paranoia and moral responsibility, making Shakespeare’s tragedy feel fiercely immediate and resonant.
Aneil Karia’s Hamlet blends classical language with modern design to create a tense, immersive experience for a new generation.
Hamlet will be in UK and Irish cinemas from 6th February 2026.
