In a well-executed match at Junction Oval, Melbourne, on November 29, 2025, Melbourne Stars Women defeated Melbourne Renegades Women by 45 runs in the 28th match of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). The Stars posted a solid 160/5 in their allotted 20 overs, with Meg Lanning leading from the front with an unbeaten 73. The Renegades, in response, could only manage 115/10 in 16.3 overs, with standout performances from Deandra Dottin and Issy Wong unable to salvage the chase.

WBBL|11: Meg Lanning’s captaincy shines as Melbourne Stars set up a defendable target

The Stars’ innings was anchored by captain Lanning, who produced a masterclass with the bat, scoring 73* off 58 balls, a knock that included 7 boundaries and a six. Lanning’s steady yet aggressive approach allowed the Stars to reach 160/5 in their 20 overs.

Despite a quick 65-run opening stand, the Stars faced a few setbacks in the middle overs as wickets fell at regular intervals. Rhys McKenna‘s early dismissal, followed by Amy Jones and Annabel Sutherland‘s quick exits, kept the pressure on. However, the lower order remained steady, and Kim Garth and Danielle Gibson made vital contributions towards the end. Lanning’s composed knock ensured the Stars had enough runs on the board for a defendable total.

The Renegades’ bowlers, particularly Milly Illingworth, put in a competitive effort, with Illingworth claiming three wickets for just 19 runs. However, their efforts fell short, and the Stars were able to post a total that would prove difficult for the Renegades to chase down, setting up a thrilling finish.

WBBL|11: Melbourne Renegades’ chase falls short despite Deandra Dottin’s resilience

The Renegades started their chase with an explosive intent but soon found themselves in trouble, losing wickets at regular intervals. Deandra Dottin’s 23 off 21 balls was the highest contribution for the Renegades, but once she fell, the middle order collapsed. Sarah Coyte and Alice Capsey also struggled, contributing only 4 and 15 runs respectively. Renegades were reduced to 39/4 by the 7th over, with Georgia Wareham, Alice Capsey and Naomi Stoltenberg all dismissed early.

The Renegades’ chase was completely derailed by a remarkable bowling performance from the Stars, led by Marizanne Kapp and Annabel Sutherland. Kapp picked up a crucial wicket and bowled economically, while Sutherland’s spell resulted in a key breakthrough. The Stars’ bowlers kept the pressure high, with Maisy Gibson and Rhys McKenna chipping in with tight spells that did not allow the Renegades to build partnerships. Despite a spirited effort from Issy Wong, who scored a quick-fire 20, the Renegades ultimately fell short, ending their innings at 115/10 in 16.3 overs.
