Cricket fans at the Junction Oval were treated to an entertaining double-header in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2025, as the Perth Scorchers registered a narrow DLS win over the Adelaide Strikers in the first fixture, before the Melbourne Renegades chased down a tricky total to outplay the Melbourne Stars in the second match. Both contests delivered standout individual performances, tactical shifts, and crucial momentum for the teams involved.

Adelaide Strikers struggle as Sophie Devine dominates with the ball

The first match of the day saw a disciplined bowling effort from the Perth Scorchers stun the Adelaide Strikers, who were bundled out for just 112 in 17.4 overs. On a surface that demanded patience, the Scorchers’ attack executed their plans to perfection, with Sophie Devine leading from the front.

Devine delivered a sensational spell, returning figures of 3/12, dismantling the Strikers’ top order and never allowing them to settle into rhythm. Her breakthroughs came at crucial intervals, ensuring the Strikers could never rebuild after losing early wickets.

For Adelaide, Ellie Johnston’s 33 off 21 balls stood out as the lone bright spot. She provided a much-needed burst of momentum with crisp boundaries, but her dismissal triggered a collapse that the Strikers failed to recover from. With little support from the middle and lower order, Adelaide’s innings ended prematurely and below par.

Scorchers steady in chase before rain impacts proceedings

Chasing 113, the Perth Scorchers approached the target with caution, knowing the pitch still offered movement for disciplined bowling. Katie Mack anchored the innings with an assured 24 off 30, ensuring the chase never drifted out of control.

At 55/2 in 9.1 overs, rain interrupted play, forcing the match officials to turn to the DLS method. When the revised calculations were confirmed, the Scorchers were declared winners by 9 runs, capitalising on the advantage gained during the early part of the chase. For her all-round control and impact with the ball, Devine was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match. Her spell proved decisive in shaping the match and continues to underline her importance to the Scorchers’ WBBL campaign.

Melbourne Renegades outplay Melbourne Stars in tense clash

Stars post competitive total with balanced contributions

In the second match of the day, the Melbourne Stars produced a fighting performance with the bat, posting 141/7 in their 20 overs. The innings lacked a single dominant knock but gained strength through multiple key contributions.

Youngster Rhys McKenna top-scored with 32, showing composure during middle overs. Skipper Annabel Sutherland chipped in with a vital 22, while Kim Garth added a handy 29, ensuring the Stars crossed the 140-run mark.

For the Renegades, Deandra Dottin was exceptional with the ball, delivering a fiery spell of 3/20 and halting the Stars’ charge during critical phases. Her variations and accuracy kept Melbourne Stars from accelerating at the back end.

Renegades complete composed chase led by Courtney Webb and Sophie Molineux

Chasing 142, the Melbourne Renegades crafted a perfectly paced pursuit, ultimately reaching 145/6 in 18.5 overs. Courtney Webb’s crucial 37 provided the backbone of the chase, as she manoeuvred the strike smartly and kept the scoreboard moving.

Captain Sophie Molineux’s valuable 32 added stability, especially during the middle overs when the Stars were searching for breakthroughs. Despite some late wickets, the Renegades held their nerve and crossed the line comfortably with seven balls to spare.

For her match-defining spell, Dottin was named Player of the Match, marking a standout performance that tilted the derby in the Renegades’ favour.
