Perth Scorchers Women secured a dominant four-wicket victory over the Melbourne Renegades Women in the 25th match of the WBBL|11 season, held at the Junction Oval in Melbourne on Thursday. Scorchers’ captain, Sophie Devine, was the architect of the win, delivering a brilliant all-round performance that helped chase down the Renegades’ total of 150 with eight balls to spare.

Melbourne Renegades post competitive total thanks to Nicole Faltum’s knock

After Perth Scorchers won the toss and elected to bowl, Melbourne Renegades set a challenging target, posting 150 runs before being bowled out on the final ball of the 20th over.

The innings was anchored by a spectacular performance from wicketkeeper-batter Nicole Faltum, who top-scored with a powerful 41 not out off 28 balls. Faltum’s knock included six fours, providing the necessary momentum in the death overs. However, the Scorchers’ bowlers applied consistent pressure, chipping away at the wickets.

The Scorchers’ bowling unit shared the spoils efficiently:

    • Skipper Sophie Devine led from the front with a tight spell, taking 2 wickets for 16 runs in her two overs.
    • Young seamer Chloe Ainsworth was impressive, claiming 2 wickets for 17 runs.
    • Amy Edgar matched Devine’s haul, also bagging 2 wickets for 34 runs.

Key spinners Alana King (1/33) and Lilly Mills (1/19) ensured no major partnerships flourished in the middle overs.

Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney set the stage in  Scorchers’ chase

Chasing 151, the Scorchers got off to a flying start, powered by a massive opening stand between captain Sophie Devine and wicketkeeper Beth Mooney.

Devine was in destructive form, smashing 46 runs off just 24 deliveries at an astonishing strike rate of 191.67. Her innings, which featured six fours and two sixes, broke the back of the chase before she fell in the sixth over. Mooney played a crucial supporting role, contributing 41 runs off 31 balls.

The Renegades fought back bravely in the middle overs, primarily through the off-spin of Alice Capsey. She delivered a superb spell, grabbing four quick wickets to bring the Renegades back into the contest:

Capsey first dismissed Katie Mack and then later followed up with the wickets of Mooney, Paige Scholfield and Chloe Ainsworth.

Capsey finished with outstanding figures of 4 wickets for 14 runs from her three overs.

However, the Scorchers’ deep batting lineup ensured the momentum did not completely swing away.

With the score precariously placed at 118 for 6, the unbeaten partnership between Freya Kemp (18 not out off 14) and Lilly Mills (15 not out off 16) navigated the team safely home. Their calm, unbroken stand of 33 runs saw the Scorchers comfortably cross the finish line in the 19th over.

The win reinforces the Perth Scorchers’ position in the WBBL|11 standings, with Devine’s masterful all-round show proving the difference on the day.
