It has been announced, in an exclusive report from Deadline, that Martin Scorsese‘s next film, which will be an adaptation of the novel What Happens at Night, has cast Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as its leads.
The movie is expected to start production in January, with Studiocanal producing and Apple Original Films in talks to finance. Patrick Marber wrote the script for the project after Studiocanal acquired the rights to the novel back in spring 2023. Originally, Scorsese was only intended to produce the movie as other potential projects circulated for his next directorial effort.
The plot of the novel follows a married American couple who travel to a small European town to adopt a baby. As they check into a deserted hotel, they encounter a peculiar cast of characters and struggle to claim their baby as things start to diverge into strange territory.
Scorsese’s last movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, was a massive success for Apple, so it makes sense that they would also back his next movie. What Happens at Night will also mark the seventh feature-length collaboration between DiCaprio and Scorsese.
DiCaprio did have several projects on the horizon, including an Evel Knievel biopic directed by Damien Chazelle, but in the end, those projects never came to fruition. He can currently be seen in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which is their first project together and has already received rapturous praise across the board.
Lawrence, on the other hand, can be next seen in Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love alongside Robert Pattinson, which is also produced by Scorsese. The movie premiered at Cannes, where it was then acquired by Mubi for a wider release in November, with its UK Premiere as part of the 2025 BFI London Film Festival next month.
No release date has been announced yet for What Happens at Night.
