Gary Neville claimed Idrissa Gueye “snapped” when the Everton midfielder received a bizarre red card against Manchester United in the Premier League on Monday.

Senegal international Gueye was sent off in the 13th minute at Old Trafford, where the Toffees were drawing 0-0 with opponents aiming to win a fifth successive home match.

The 36-year-old was dismissed five years to the day since serving a one-match suspension for Paris Saint-Germain for his previous red card, having been booked twice away to Leipzig in the Champions League on November 4 2020.

Idrissa Gueye red card: ‘Not much in it’

Referee Tony Harrington sent Gueye off following an altercation with teammate Michael Keane inside the penalty area.

Gueye appeared to raise a hand to defender Keane’s face, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford then putting his arms around the three-time Ligue 1 champion to hold him back.

“He has snapped,” former United captain Neville told Sky Sports. “He has slapped his own teammate. There is not much in it.

“How much venom was in that slap? He has been sent off for that. Was it a little slap or a proper whack?

“There is no doubt a hand comes out to the face but it didn’t look too much. They might have had to send him off purely because there is a strike to the face.”

Man United vs Everton: Dewsbury-Hall goal

Everton had not scored at Old Trafford since 2021 but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall made light of that record and their numerical disadvantage by curling in a sensational 29th-minute opener.

Midfielder Dewsbury-Hall jinked his way to the edge of the box in the left channel before finding the far corner of the net via Senne Lammens’ fingertips.

“You can’t say it is a surprise,” said Neville. “You have to question the goalkeeper, but this is about Everton and their response to a difficult situation.”

Victory would lift Everton above Liverpool, who started in 11th, while United were aiming to move two points behind second-placed Chelsea.

Man United starting lineup vs Everton

Defender Harry Maguire and forward Benjamin Sesko were unavailable for United because of injuries sustained in the 2-2 draw at Spurs on November 8, while striker Matheus Cunha was out after suffering an issue in training.

Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro came in, with 18-year-old winger Shea Lacey in the squad for the first time.

Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was back on the bench, as was centre-back Lisandro Martinez following a long-term knee injury.

Manchester United starting XI: Senne Lammens, Leny Yoro, Matthijs De Ligt, Luke Shaw, Noussair Mazraoui, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Patrick Dorgu, Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, Joshua Zirkzee

Man United substitutes: Altay Bayindir, Diogo Dalot, Ayden Heaven, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte, Shea Lacey

Everton starting lineup vs Manchester United

Defenders Jarrad Branthwaite (hamstring) and Nathan Patterson (foot and groin) were out for Everton, as was on-loan Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl.

Right-back Seamus Coleman, 37, was in Everton’s lineup for the first time this season, having started in Ireland’s games at home to Portugal and away to Hungary during the international break and helped his country reach the 2026 World Cup play-offs in last-gasp fashion in Budapest.

It was unclear whether Coleman’s 10th-minute replacement by Jake O’Brien was because of injury or a shaky start by the veteran, who looked frustrated as he made his way off.

Everton starting XI: Jordan Pickford, Seamus Coleman, Michael Keane, James Tarkowski, Vitalii Mykolenko, James Garner, Idrissa Gueye, Iliman Ndiaye, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Jack Grealish, Thierno Barry

Everton substitutes: Mark Travers, Tom King, Dwight McNeil, Beto, Jake O’Brien, Tyler Dibling, Carlos Alcaraz, Adam Aznou, Tim Iroegbunam
