While appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, hosted by Josh Horowitz, filmmaker Zack Snyder hinted that another comic book adaptation focusing on DC’s beloved Justice League is potentially being discussed as a next step in the growing franchise.
Snyder’s contributions to the DC film universe ran alongside the initial DCEU, which began with his Man of Steel film, released in 2013, and ended with 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (dir. James Wan). He also has directing credits for 2016’s long-awaited Batman v Superman.
In 2017, Snyder released the Justice League film, featuring Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg banding together to save the world once again.
Director credits on the film are disputed as Zack Snyder had to step down during production due to the tragic passing of his daughter, with director Joss Whedon taking over. The film earned mixed to negative reviews despite being one of Hollywood’s most expensive. Four years later, Snyder released his director’s cut of the project to more positive reviews. This led to talks of the Snyderverse being revitalised, which the director addressed during the podcast.
“We’ve absolutely talked about it quite a bit,” he confirmed. “Yeah, I mean. We live in a world where um all that’s possible and whatever form it would take… You know that would be amazing.”
“I would never say that there’s no way… was on the ride that created Justice League, and if you were in my shoes, there were numerous times, dark times, when there was no chance that there would ever be my version of it,” Snyder continued. “It will never exist. It can’t… cost, politics, everything stood against.”
The filmmaker concluded: “And yet it exists. The fans should never forget they did that. They also raised a ton of money for suicide prevention. They did a lot of good. They catch a lot of flak for being toxic or whatever, but they literally saved human lives.”
Any new films released under Snyder’s direction have been confirmed to exist “independently without interfering with James Gunn’s DCU”, which began last year with his critically acclaimed and audience-acclaimed Superman, starring David Corenswet.
This universe is set to expand with the Supergirl sequel starring Milly Alcock and due to be released this summer. There is also an upcoming adaptation involving Clayface, 2027’s Superman: Man of Tomorrow, and a Batman revamp, The Brave and the Bold.
