60 Minutes has seen quite a number of figures leave the show over the past few months. Recently, a new executive producer has been installed for the program. Since then, Bari Weiss and the new EP have shared statements on the development.
CBS News Has Seen Several Shakeups Since Bari Weiss Was Made Editor-In-Chief
Viewers have seen quite a few changes happen at CBS News since Bari Weiss was installed as editor-in-chief. Before this, she was known for founding The Free Press, which was purchased by Paramount Skydance, as well as her work for The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.
In recent months, one program that has been significantly impacted by the changes at the network is 60 Minutes. Notably, the program, which has become famous for its focus on independent journalism, has been running since 1968.
Recently, viewers have seen a number of figures leave the program over the past few months. Anderson Cooper announced his departure earlier this year. Since then, news has come out that correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega will no longer be part of the show.
In another shakeup, the program’s executive producer, Tanya Simon, has been ousted and replaced with Nick Bilton. Prior to this, there had been speculation that Weiss wanted to bring on another figure to work alongside Simon.
Bilton is a veteran tech journalist and documentary filmmaker. He has spent 13 years with The New York Times. Similar to Weiss herself, he doesn’t have prior experience running a television news operation.
Nick Bilton Introduced Himself In A Letter To The 60 Minutes Staff
Notably, Bilton will also be the first executive producer in 60 Minutes to be an outside hire. The show has had four previous leaders: Don Hewitt, Jeff Fager, Bill Owens, and Simon herself. All four were already CBS News alumni before being given their positions on 60 Minutes.
According to NBC News, Weiss described Bilton as “one of the most entrepreneurial journalists of our time and the perfect leader for one of the most entrepreneurial news brands of all time. We have huge ambition for ‘60 Minutes’ to reach new heights through deep, revelatory journalism that breaks news, exposes wrongdoing, widens public understanding, and forces accountability from every institution and every center of power.”
As the outlet noted, Bilton introduced himself in a letter to the program’s staff. As it read, “I’m here to lead this show, not preserve it under glass. That means honoring what works and being honest about what doesn’t. I have a notebook full of ideas.”
Bilton continued, “Some are about the show itself. Some are about the next generation of correspondents. Some are about the strange fact that we produce one extraordinary hour for one night a week in a world that consumes content around the clock.” In addition, he also shared a message on X, calling his new position an “honor.”
