Kash Patel, who was confirmed as FBI director in 2025 following a closely watched and narrowly decided vote, remains in the headlines more than a year later. The former Department of Defense chief of staff and longtime ally of President Donald Trump has become one of Washington’s most talked-about figures, not only for his role leading the bureau but also for his personal life — including his relationship with girlfriend Alexis Wilkins, which has recently drawn increased scrutiny.

Patel’s nomination advanced through the Senate Judiciary Committee before he was narrowly confirmed by the full Senate in February 2025. A former federal prosecutor, public defender and Trump aide, he has pledged to restore trust in the FBI and refocus its mission.

“The American people deserve an FBI that is transparent, accountable, and committed to justice,” Patel posted on social media after his confirmation. “The politicalization of our justice system has eroded public trust — but that ends today.”

Who Is Kash Patel?

Patel is the FBI director following his confirmation hearing on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Formerly the Chief of Staff at the Department of Defense (DoD), Patel is also a well-known defense lawyer and federal prosecutor. During President Trump’s first term, he served as senior counsel for the House Intelligence Committee.

Patel graduated from the University of Richmond, earned a certificate in international law from University College London (UCL), and obtained a JD from Pace University School of Law. Additionally, he holds another certificate in international law from UCL in London.

Where Is Kash Patel From?

Patel was born in Garden City, New York. He is the son of immigrants, and his parents are originally from India and they taught him the Hindu faith. Patel provided a loving tribute to his parents in an op-ed in the Washington Street Journal.

In it, he shared that he would represent: “Not only the dreams of my parents, but the hopes of millions of Americans who stand for justice, fairness, and the rule of law. My commitment to these principles is deeply rooted in my family’s history. My father fled Idi Amin’s genocidal dictatorship in Uganda. My mother was born in Tanzania. They married in India and emigrated to New York, where I was born and raised in a bustling household that included my father’s seven siblings, their spouses and six children.”

His parents first immigrated to Canada to escape anti-Indian persecution in the 1970s.

Is Kash Patel Married?

Patel is not married. While he has largely kept his personal life private, it was reported in February 2025 that he is in a relationship with his girlfriend, Wilkins.

Wilkins is a country singer and political commentator who has been dating Patel since at least 2023. Patel is 46, while Wilkins is 27, and she has increasingly stepped into the public eye alongside his rise to FBI director.

In 2014, according to The New York Times, Patel participated in an Above the Law charity bachelor auction benefiting the Switchboard of Miami but later dropped out after a blogger pointed out that his law license appeared to be outdated in the state.
