The local council in Tenerife are taking steps to begin a long-awaited train project on the island, with the popular Tenerife South–Reina Sofía Airport set for a stop to help limit car congestion in the area.

Authorities in Tenerife are moving forward with a long-awaited rail project to tackle traffic near the Tenerife South–Reina Sofía Airport.

The project promises to be among the most expensive and crucial infrastructure initiatives undertaken to improve transport links on the island.

The first plans were drawn up 13 years ago, and an agreement between the local council and Aena, Spain’s airport operator, has now removed one of the main bureaucratic hurdles still facing the new train line.

This follows news that Aena has committed to modifying its planned refurbishment of Tenerife South, covering both the terminal and outdoor areas, in order to incorporate a train stop.

President of Tenerife council, Rosa Dávila, explained to the media on Wednesday 8th April that the agreement reached with Aena not only allows the rail service be incorporated into the new Tenerife South Airport but also speeds up the procedures for the final approval of the environmental impact report, another step required to secure funding and begin work on the line.

It is one of the key infrastructure projects to put an end to notoriously bad traffic jams on the Southern Motorway (TF-1).

Though unconfirmed, reports in local media suggest the route could also include  the Las Chafiras industrial estate, Tenerife South Airport, the port of Los Cristianos, and El Mojón hospital, among others.

Dávila explained the council will sign the agreement with Aena “shortly” and that most of the construction work for the first phase of the railway has already been completed.

Under current plans, construction of the southern line will begin with the first phase between San Isidro and Costa Adeje.

The plan is for the works to be put out to tender between late 2027 and early 2028.
