Season 24 of American Idol will soon have its winner, with its final episode expected in May. Naturally, as the end draws closer, only one contestant will be left standing. Before this happens, however, two of the show’s current hosts have spoken about a “curse” some fans have noticed impacting the series in recent years.
Carrie Underwood & Lionel Richie Recently Noticed An Interesting Trend On American Idol
American Idol is currently in its 24th season, which premiered earlier this year. Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie serve as the series’ judges, reprising their roles from last season.
After a recent show, Richie and Underwood sat down with a small group of reporters. At the time, they weighed in on something of a “bad omen” that some fans have noticed over the years.
Recently, Richie saved Rae Boyd from elimination on ’90 Night. However, she was sent packing the very next week. This brought comparisons to last season, in which Mattie Pruitt was sent home the week after she was saved by the judges.
Underwood Noted That It’s Hard To Guess What Viewers Are Thinking
This has led to something of a meme, alleging that there is some sort of American Idol curse. For her part, Underwood shared that she herself has noticed this, but felt that there was a practical reason behind it.
Underwood noted that the contestant who needed to be saved was already in trouble in the first place. As she shared, “I was talking to Luke [Bryan] and Lionel about it. It seems like the person that gets saved really has to do something, ‘cause it seems like they’re the next one again. [Rae] got saved last week, so it’s kind of like America did it again.”

For his part, Richie noted, “Whoever you save, they’re going the next time. It is one of the most interesting things I’ve observed, that the voting public has to fall in love with you. And we keep thinking… It’s the voice. It’s not. They have to fall in love with your personality.”
However, as noted by People, Underwood admitted that it’s hard to guess what the American public is thinking. She noted, “You don’t know what people are resonating with, the ones that are sitting at home watching and voting.”
“It’s the same in the music business in general. I’ve seen so many singers, songwriters that were trying to be artists as well, that I’m like, why are you not uberfamous? And for whatever reason, it’s just a disconnect, I guess, ‘cause [Rae’s] so talented.”
