Michael J. Fox is clearing the air after a shocking media blunder had fans fearing the worst. The beloved “Back to the Future” star stepped out publicly this week following a viral mishap involving CNN, which mistakenly published an obituary alongside a tribute video, triggering widespread confusion online. Michael J. Fox appeared at the “A Country Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s” event in Nashville on Wednesday, April 15, putting any rumors to rest and proving he’s very much alive.

Despite the internet frenzy, Fox isn’t losing sleep over the situation. While speaking with Entertainment Tonight at the event, the actor revealed he took the entire ordeal in stride. “It was just funny,” the “Back to the Future” star said.

Fox also shared how his phone quickly filled with concerned messages after the report began circulating. “People are really sweet about it and really understanding and more worried about it than they need to be,” Fox said. “I’m a pretty rockhard guy and, and I don’t, I don’t get upset about stuff like that.”

As panic spread across social media, Fox decided to address the situation head-on. Taking to Threads, he reassured fans with a cheeky message that quickly gained traction.

“How do you react when you turn on the TV, and CNN is reporting your death?” he penned. “Do you…A) switch to MNSBC, or whatever they are calling themselves these days, (B) Pour scolding hot water on your lap, if it hurts your fine, (C) Call your wife, hopefully she’s concerned but reassuring, (D) Relax, they do this once every year, (E) Ask yourself wtf? I thought the world was ending, but apparently it’s just me, and I’m ok. Love, Mike.”

Beyond the viral moment, Fox remains focused on what matters most.

After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the 1990s, he has become one of the most recognizable voices in the fight for awareness and research. “I was motivated by what I heard from the science people who said that the science is ahead of the money,” Fox told TIME Magazine. “

He continued, They said, ‘If you can direct money toward the right research, we can speed things along.’ And then I was touched and motivated by the patient community. They just needed someone to step in and push things along.”

In 2000, he helped establish the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which remains a driving force in the search for a cure. Fox co-founded the organization alongside Deborah Brooks, formerly of Goldman Sachs, with a clear mission in mind. He described his approach as wanting “to be a noodge; I wanted to push things along,” focusing his efforts on engaging major financial players.

Targeting businesses and hedge funds, he leaned into what motivates high achievers, telling them, “Let’s win [against this disease].” At the same time, he brought his signature personality into every room. As Fox put it, “I’ll come in your office, I’ll take pictures with all of your employees, and I’ll pound you for money.”

Coming forward with his diagnosis wasn’t something Fox did lightly. The actor revealed that he waited several years before sharing his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis publicly, carefully weighing the decision before ultimately stepping into the spotlight with it. But once he did, the response and the impact became clear.

“I went online and into Parkinson’s chat rooms, and I would go in anonymously, and would ask, ‘What do you think of this Michael Fox thing?’ And they would say, ‘It’s great.’ I would think, ‘You’re celebrating my having Parkinson’s.’ But then I got it, and realized these people were stuck in the rocking chair on the porch for all this time to just whittle away until they can’t move, and never had a part in solving their problems.”

That realization shifted everything for Fox, changing how he viewed not only his diagnosis but also his role within the community.

“The more I thought about it, the more I thought it was a privilege, and in a way, a gift,” he told the magazine. “It’s a gift that keeps on taking, but if I look at the positive side of it…this is a role that I fell into, and I found myself uniquely qualified to fulfill. Now people say, ‘I have what Michael Fox has.’ Parkinson’s patients now have an identity, and they don’t have shame.”
