A24 has revealed the full cast of its Elden Ring movie as production is set to begin.
Joining previously confirmed cast members Kit Connor (Heartstopper), Cailee Spaeny (Civil War) and Ben Whishaw (James Bond series) are:
- Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga)
- Havana Rose Liu (Bottoms)
- Sonoya Mizuno (Devs)
- Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes)
- Ruby Cruz (For All Mankind)
- Nick Offerman (Parks & Recreation)
- John Hodgkinson (The Ferryman)
- Jefferson Hall (House of the Dragon)
- Emma Laird (Mayor of Kingstown)
- Peter Serafinowicz (South Park)
Notably, the film is written and directed by Alex Garland, who helmed acclaimed films like Ex Machina, Annihilation and Civil War, and wrote the likes of 28 Days Later and Dredd. Garland is a noted video game fan and pitched an adaptation of Elden Ring to publisher Bandai Namco and developer FromSoftware. It’s unclear, however, how involved either company is in the film.
The Elden Ring game launched in 2022 and went on to win numerous awards, including Game of the Year at The Game Awards, in addition to selling over 30 million copies. It became popular for taking the challenging action-RPG formula of FromSoftware games like Dark Souls and expanding it into a vast fantasy open-world format. The game also features original lore written by George R.R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire).
However, it’s unclear exactly how Garland is approaching the film. While many video game adaptations directly pull from clear characters and storylines, like HBO’s The Last of Us series or Universal’s Mario movies, Elden Ring doesn’t exactly have an overt narrative and cast. Instead, you play as a silent, customizable protagonist as you fight difficult monsters and other enemies on your journey to repair the titular ring, with the storytelling instead mostly coming through the environment and item descriptions.
Therefore, it remains to be seen how Garland will attempt to translate elements of that experience to the big screen. The film is set to begin shooting this week in Imax in the UK for over 100 days with a budget of over US$100 million (about C$136.5 million), making it A24’s most expensive production to date. It’s set to hit theatres on March 3, 2028.
